Backspace and Draft Mode
Erase like a computer, type over like a typewriter, or only go forward.
Choose what Backspace does in Settings › Typing › Backspace:
| Choice | What Backspace does |
|---|---|
| Erase | Removes the letter, like a computer. |
| Move Back | Moves the carriage back a space, as on a typewriter; type over the letter to replace it. |
| Keep Mistakes | Draft Mode: types an x over the last letter. You only go forward. |
Draft Mode
Draft Mode is for first drafts: you can't erase, so you stop polishing and keep writing. Turn it on with Writing › Draft Mode: No Erasing (⇧⌘D) or from the goal key; a small DRAFT label appears on the goal key while it is on.
A crossed-out letter stays on the page as it would on paper. When you export, struck-out letters are left out of the plain text, Markdown and manuscript, and kept (with their x) in the typed-pages PDF.
In the manuscript
The Manuscript view erases like any editor. If you'd like Backspace to behave as it does on the machine there too, turn on Settings › Manuscript › Typewriter Backspace.
Read a sample written in Draft Mode: Morning Pages, Tuesday.
