§ ·Pages and folders

Folders and pages

How the library works: folders inside folders, and every sheet a page.

The library

Open the library with the library key at the top of the key column. It works like a writer's binder: folders can hold pages and other folders. A novel can be a folder with a folder for each part and each chapter; a diary can have a folder for each year; letters a folder for each person.

The folder you open is the one in the machine: its pages are the machine's sheets, in order.

Pages

Every sheet in the machine is a page. A page has its own paper, typeface, ink colours, title and date. When a sheet is full, the machine feeds the next one, and it becomes the next page.

From a page's menu in the library you can rename it, duplicate it, move it to another folder, or delete it (it goes to Recently Deleted). Drag pages and folders to put them in order.

New pages and folders

  • ⌘N or the New Page key: a fresh sheet at the end of the folder.
  • ⇧⌘N: a new folder.

Moving between pages

⌘[ and ⌘] go to the previous and next page. Looking at an older page? ⌥⌘L or the button at the top puts the page you last typed on back in the machine. See also All Pages.

Folder details

A folder's menu also sets a word target for everything inside it, and a one-line synopsis shown under its name.

Where the files are

Every folder is a real folder in iCloud Drive › Dactylo, and every page a plain text file, so your writing can be opened anywhere, with or without Dactylo.
