Guides: the ruler, line numbers and margins

Pencil marks on the paper that show where you are, in the colour you choose.

Turn the guides on or off with ⇧⌘G, View › Show Guides or Settings › Paper › Guides.

On the machine they show:

  • dashed lines at the margins and at the last line of the sheet,
  • a column ruler under the typing line, with a tick every five columns and a number every ten,
  • a small arrow under the cell of the next letter,
  • a label with the line number and the letters left on the line, which turns red near the margin,
  • the red margin arrows you can drag (see Margins and line spacing).

In the Manuscript view, each page shows its margins, a ruler at the top and line numbers every five lines.

Guide colour

Settings › Paper › Guide Colour: Automatic (dark blue on light paper, light blue on dark paper), Dark Blue, Black, Red, Dark Green or Light Blue. Each page keeps its own guide colour, like its paper.

Guides are never printed: exports leave them out.
