The four views
Desk, Whole Machine, Page and Manuscript, and how to move between them.
Dactylo shows your writing four ways. Choose one from View in the menu bar, from the Look key, or with the shortcuts below. Esc moves between the three machine views.
| View | Shortcut | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Desk: Page and Keys | ⌘1 | The page you are typing on at the top, the machine's keys below, both large. The best view for long sessions. |
| Whole Machine | ⌘2 | The complete typewriter on the desk. Turn it, tilt it, zoom in. |
| Page | ⌘3 | Close up on the paper as it comes out of the machine. |
| Manuscript | ⌘4 | The open folder's pages as text you can read, select and correct. See The manuscript. |
Turning and zooming the machine
In Whole Machine, drag the machine (or the desk around it) to turn it. On a Mac, pinch on the trackpad, hold ⌘ or Control and scroll, or press ⌘+ / ⌘− to zoom; scrolling alone moves around. On the iPad, pinch with two fingers and drag with two fingers to move around. Double-click the desk (or press ⌘0) to go back to the standard view.
The size of the page and the keys
On a large screen the page and the keys can be smaller; on a small one the page can come closer. In Page and Desk, press ⌘− or ⌘+ (⌘0 for the standard size), pinch on the trackpad, or hold ⌘ or Control and scroll over the page or the keys. On the iPad, pinch. The keys never grow wider than the window. Dactylo remembers the sizes you choose.
Fit Everything (⌥⌘F) keeps the whole sheet, the carriage at both ends and the keys in the frame at any angle.
Saved views
Found an angle you like? Choose View › Saved Views › Save This View…, give it a name, and pick it again later. Saved views keep the angle, the zoom and the framing.
Zoom while typing
With Zoom In While Typing on, Whole Machine moves close to the paper as you type and steps back when you stop.
