Goals, sessions and counters

The counters on the covers, a daily goal, timed sessions and word targets.

The counters

Mechanical counters sit on the two ribbon covers of the machine (in Whole Machine): Words, Chars and Sentences on the left; Pages, Target and Today on the right. They roll as you type. Choose which ones show in Settings › The Machine › Counters.

Target shows the words written against the folder's own word target (or the target of a folder it sits in). Where there is none, the counter is called Goal and shows today's words against your daily goal, the same number as Today.

The goal key

The goal key in the key column shows a ring that fills as you approach today's goal, and below it today's words or the time left in a session. Tap it for the numbers and the controls.

Daily goal

Settings › Goals › Daily Goal: from 250 to 3,000 words a day, or none.

Writing sessions

A session is a timed stretch of writing (10 to 90 minutes, Settings › Goals › Writing Session). Start it from the goal key or with ⌥⌘T; a bell rings at the end.

Word targets for a folder

In the library, open a folder's menu and choose Set a Word Target (for example 80,000 for a novel). Everything inside the folder counts toward it.
