Manuscript for publishers

A standard manuscript in PDF or Word, formatted the way agents and editors expect.

Many agents, editors and competitions ask for submissions in standard manuscript format. Dactylo makes it for you from any folder.

What it looks like

  • Courier 12 point, double spaced, one-inch margins on every side.
  • A title page: your name and contact details at the top left, the approximate word count at the top right, and the title and "by" line in the middle of the page.
  • Every chapter (every folder) starts on a new page, a third of the way down.
  • Paragraphs indented half an inch; a centred # for a scene break.
  • A running header on every page after the first: surname / title / page number.
  • END after the last line.
  • Bold, italic and underline kept; letters struck out in Draft Mode left out.

Your details

Fill in Settings › For Publishers › Your Name and Contact (address, email, phone). They are printed on the title page.

Export

Choose Export › For Publishers (PDF) or Word (.docx). The manuscript always uses plain white paper and Courier, whatever the pages look like on the machine.

Always check the submission guidelines of the agent or publisher: some ask for slightly different details, which you can adjust in the Word file.
